Looking to rebound from their tough opening night loss against YULA, the Bruins clashed with Milken High School in their second De Toledo tournament game. An old Geffen Academy friend in Michael Banooni had been set for a revenge game against the Bruins after transferring to Milken, but a preseason injury derailed that thought. Instead, Banooni provided information to his new squad about the tendencies of certain players on his old team, and it worked. Milken, who dominated from the opening tip to the concluding horn, quickly shut down the Bruins’ primary ball-handler in Nathan Muhumuza, and forced other players to create their own shots.
Stevan Markovic, who led the Bruins in scoring with 14, accounted for half of the team’s total points. Although the early season shooting problems continued to plague the Bruins, Milken’s ability to control the paint and get out in transition was the deciding factor in the game. When Geffen Academy elected to try to limit the size of their opposition by crowding the interior, the three-point shooting quickly picked up for Milken, and they won every facet of the game. By the time the fourth and final period arrived, Milken had the ability to coast for the remainder of the contest. A tough beginning to their year, Geffen Academy will play their third game in three days tomorrow against SOCES as they attempt to turn their early-season woes around.
