Avalon, Catalina - The Bruins were unable to complete the sweep in their triple header at Catalina Island today as the Girls Varsity Bruins dropped the third and final game against Avalon. A hard loss to swallow, the Bruins fell to a team who had just played a game less than four hours earlier. Both squads started out slow as teams were unable to finish transition layups as well as knock down open jumpers. The teams picked up the pace in the second quarter, as the two teams started trading baskets as the score remained close.
Veteran player Chloe Berkowitz and Second-Year Force Ciahna McNairy carried a lot of the production load for Geffen Academy, scoring 10 and 8 points respectively. The two also combined for 34 boards as well. However, with only 6 players, the Bruins had to look elsewhere for production as well. It was the calm presence of Sophomore point guard Madeline (Maddie) Sugimoto who added nine points, two rebounds and an assist as well as a few clutch shots in the later stages of the game to keep Geffen Academy within striking distance.
Unfortunately, the Lady Lancers were able to pull away in the final minutes as two back to back triples fell to but Avalon up by ten with just under three and a half to play. The Bruins did their best to fight back, but it was too little too late as Geffen Academy was unable to come up with the steals they so desperately needed in order to come back and beat Avalon. But as the great baseball manager Connie Mack so famously once said, "You can't win em' all."
