Los Angeles, California - The preseason tournament for the Geffen Academy Bruins kicked off on Monday Night against the Canoga Park Hunters, and the game did not disappoint. Shots were falling, hustle plays occurred, and tensions flared as the game got tighter and tighter. Welcome back to basketball, fans. Unfortunately, Geffen Academy’s efforts came up short when their defense faltered down the stretch and they were unable to stop the Hunters when they were in the attacking 47.
Star guard Cypress Ohebsion led all scorers for the Bruins with 21 points as well as six rebounds. Running mate Nathan Muhumuza added 11 along with 8 boards and 4 dimes. However, these two combined for more than half of Geffen Academy’s total points as the Bruins struggled immensely from the perimeter for the majority of the game. Canoga Park had no trouble shooting the basketball; in the second half alone, they made 6 threes, most of which came on a 13-4 run midway through the third quarter. Eventually, the Bruins could no longer afford to trade twos for threes and found themselves in a hole of 15 points with 4 minutes to play. Although the team rallied back to score on some fast breaks and buckle down and get some defensive stops, it was too little, too late, and Canoga Park went on to secure the win.
The Bruins will try to bounce back in the tournament tomorrow when they take on the Palmdale Aerospace Academy at De Toledo High School once again. The Bruins will need to make more timely shots and their energy has to be sustained for a full 48 minutes. (or in this case 32). They do that, they’ve got a good chance to solidify their first victory and get in the win column.
